From Thurlow Lane

Thurlow Studio began in 2014 in Thurlow Lane, Redfern. Rather than naming the practice after ourselves, we chose a name the way you might a café, after the street where it all started.

For the first seven years, Thurlow Studio was a side project. We helped friends, family, and neighbours with renovations and extensions, and supported members of The School of Renovating (founded by David’s mother, Bernadette Janson) with their projects. Those early years gave us two things: a deep respect for working with existing buildings, and a collaborative way of working with clients that still defines us today.

Spending that time on small projects taught us the essentials. We learned how to deliver high-quality work cost-effectively, and how to navigate the unknowns that always come with older buildings. From this work grew Renovator Concepts, our design service for budget-conscious renovators and first-home buyers, which still runs alongside our core practice today.

Now, with more than a decade of experience in alterations and additions, we remain driven by the same ethos. We want to create enduring, high-quality homes without “knock down and rebuild” being the default. Not all existing buildings are worth retaining, but our process, from design through to documentation, is built around reuse wherever it is practical to do so. This philosophy leads to more sustainable outcomes, and more interesting architecture.

David Janson

B.Des M.Arch
ARB 9860 (NSW) | 20487 (Vic)

David is a registered architect in NSW and Victoria, with experience spanning residential, hospitality, and early education projects. Before founding Thurlow Studio, he worked with some of Sydney’s most respected small practices. At Collins and Turner Architects, where he was an associate, David delivered several high-profile projects including the award-winning Barangaroo House. Earlier in his career, at Stephen Collier Architects, he contributed to finely crafted residential and small-scale public projects that have been widely recognised for their design quality.

David has led projects that have received multiple industry awards, and his experience bridges both high-profile public-facing buildings, and detailed private homes. This combination has given him a unique perspective on how architecture can be bold and transformative while remaining personal and finely made.

He studied architecture at UTS Sydney and ETSAB Barcelona under the DARC sustainability scholarship. Today, alongside his practice, he teaches design and construction at UTS, helping to shape the next generation of architects.

Shane Marshall

B.Des M.Arch
ARB NSW no. 10015

Shane’s career spans major public infrastructure and bespoke residential architecture, giving him a breadth of experience from city-shaping projects to homes rich in detail and character. At HASSELL, he was a design and station architecture lead on the award-winning Sydney Metro. He later joined Sam Crawford Architects, where he managed a wide range of public and private projects, from community-centred buildings to tailored homes.

He has led projects across scales and sectors, developing a perspective on architecture that is ambitious, practical, and enduring. His work is motivated by a desire to create places that empower ownership, are grounded in their context, and stand the test of time.

Outside the studio, Shane contributes to the Paul Pholeros Foundation, an organisation that addresses social inequality and ill-health by improving housing in rural Australia and Nepal. This work strengthens his belief in architecture as a means of fostering healthier, more resilient communities.

Leading together

Together, David and Shane bring complementary experience across high-profile projects and finely crafted homes, united by a belief that architecture should be collaborative, sustainable, enduring and unpretentious. With a focus on adapting and extending existing buildings, they create designs that respect what is already there while unlocking new possibilities. As co-directors of Thurlow Studio, they guide each project from first sketch to completion, ensuring clients feel heard and supported at every stage.
